Mirror & Water Image

Mirror and Water Image is a topic where an object, letter, number or figure is shown and you have to find its reflection in a mirror or water. It is a visual topic that requires understanding how reflections work.

Basic Concept:

When you stand in front of a mirror:

  • Your left hand appears on the right side in the mirror
  • Your right hand appears on the left side in the mirror
  • Top and bottom remain the same
  • Only left and right are swapped

When you look at a reflection in water:

  • Left and right remain the same
  • Top and bottom are swapped
  • The image appears upside down

Mirror Image Rules:

Rule 1 - In a vertical mirror (mirror placed on the right or left side):

  • Left becomes Right and Right becomes Left
  • Top remains Top and Bottom remains Bottom

Rule 2 - In a horizontal mirror (mirror placed on top or bottom):

  • Top becomes Bottom and Bottom becomes Top
  • Left remains Left and Right remains Right

Water Image Rules:

Rule 1 - Water image is always upside down

  • Top becomes Bottom and Bottom becomes Top
  • Left remains Left and Right remains Right

Rule 2 - Water image = Mirror image rotated 180° horizontally

Types of Mirror & Water Image Questions:

Type 1 - Mirror Image of Letters Find the mirror image of given letters.

Letters that look the same in mirror (Symmetric Letters):

A, H, I, M, O, T, U, V, W, X, Y

Letters that look different in mirror:

B, C, D, E, F, G, J, K, L, N, P, Q, R, S, Z

Example:

Mirror image of the letter B = looks like a reversed B (opens to left instead of right)

Mirror image of A = same as A (symmetric letter)

Type 2 - Mirror Image of Numbers Find the mirror image of given numbers.

Numbers that look the same in mirror: 0, 1, 8

Numbers that look different in mirror: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9

Example:

Mirror image of 2 = reversed 2

Mirror image of 8 = same as 8

Type 3 - Mirror Image of Words Find the mirror image of a complete word.

Example:

Mirror image of HOUSE = ESUOH (letters reversed AND each letter mirrored)

Wait - in mirror image of a word:

  • The order of letters is reversed (right to left)
  • Each individual letter is also mirrored

Type 4 - Mirror Image of Figures/Clocks Find the mirror image of a geometric figure or clock.

For clocks:

If original clock shows 3:00

Mirror image will show 9:00 (left-right swap)

Rule for clock mirror image:

Mirror time = 11:60 - Original time

Example: Original = 4:30

Mirror = 11:60 - 4:30 = 7:30

Type 5 - Water Image of Letters, Numbers and Figures Find the water reflection (upside down image).

Letters that look same in water image: C, D, E, H, I, K, O, X (symmetric horizontally)

Example:

Water image of A = upside down A (like a V shape with line)

Water image of H = same as H (horizontally symmetric)

How to Solve Mirror Image Questions:

Step 1 - Identify if it is a mirror image (left-right swap) or water image (top-bottom swap).

Step 2 - For letters - check if the letter is symmetric. If yes, image is same. If no, reverse it.

Step 3 - For figures - mentally flip the figure left to right for mirror image.

Step 4 - For clocks - use the formula: Mirror time = 11:60 - Original time.

Step 5 - For words - reverse the entire word and mirror each letter.

Quick Tricks:

Trick 1 - Symmetric letters A H I M O T U V W X Y look same in mirror. Memorize these.

Trick 2 - For clock mirror image always use: Mirror time = 11:60 - Given time.

Trick 3 - Water image is simply a mirror image turned upside down.

Trick 4 - In figure questions, imagine folding the paper along the mirror line - what you see on the other side is the mirror image.

Important Tips:

  • Memorize symmetric letters and numbers
  • For clock questions always use the formula
  • Practice drawing mirror and water images of all 26 letters
  • 1 to 2 questions come from this topic in SSC CGL every year
  • Do not confuse mirror image with water image - they are different
