UPSC Releases Provisional Answer Key for Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 - First Time in History; Objection Window Open Till 31 May 2026
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) released the Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 Provisional Answer Key on the official website upsc.gov.in on 27 May 2026. Candidates who appeared in the examination held on 24 May 2026 can now download the answer key for both General Studies Paper-I and CSAT Paper-II from the official website.
This year, UPSC has broken with long-standing tradition. In previous years, UPSC never released the answer key until the entire exam process - Prelims, Mains, and Interviews - was completed. That process used to take over a year, leaving students completely in the dark. Along with the answer key, UPSC has also opened the QPRep Portal - a platform where candidates can raise objections if they believe any answer in the key is incorrect. Candidates need to submit proof from a reliable source to support their objection. The last date to raise objections is 31 May 2026 at 6:00 PM.
In compliance with a Supreme Court judgement, the UPSC formulated guidelines to release the provisional answer key on its website after conducting the civil services preliminary examination. The process, which will be implemented from the 2026 civil services preliminary examination onwards, will apply to all structured examinations conducted by the UPSC. Marks of the preliminary examination shall be released only after the declaration of final results, the Union Minister of State for Personnel, Jitendra Singh, had said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.
Background: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Civil Services Examination (CSE) annually to select officers for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and over 20 other Group A and Group B Central Services. The examination is conducted in three stages: Civil Services Preliminary Examination (objective), Civil Services Main Examination (written), and the Personality Test (Interview).
The move to release provisional answer keys soon after the Prelims follows months of hearings in the Supreme Court over UPSC's earlier lack of transparency. The Supreme Court welcomed UPSC's revised approach to answer key publication. Candidates can submit evidence-backed objections, which will be reviewed by experts before finalising the key and declaring the Prelims results. The UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 was conducted on 24 May 2026 across examination centres throughout India, with lakhs of aspirants appearing in two shifts for GS Paper 1 and CSAT Paper 2.
Why in News: The release of UPSC's provisional answer key for the first time in its history is a landmark development in the transparency and governance of India's most prestigious civil services examination. For SSC CGL, Banking, Railway, and UPSC examinations, this topic tests knowledge of the UPSC's structure, the three stages of the Civil Services Exam, the new QPRep objection portal, CSAT qualifying requirements, and the Supreme Court's role in bringing about this transparency reform. It is also directly relevant to lakhs of Adhigamya users preparing for UPSC.
