Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing Begins 5-Day India Visit - Arrives at Bodh Gaya on May 30; Bilateral Talks with PM Modi Scheduled
Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing began a five-day official visit to India on Saturday at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, starting his trip from Bodh Gaya, Bihar. During his visit, President U Min Aung Hlaing will hold talks with PM Modi on June 1 to further strengthen ties between the two countries. This will be President U Min Aung Hlaing's first visit to India after assuming office.
He will be accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising several Cabinet ministers, senior officials, and prominent business leaders. As part of his itinerary, the Myanmar leader will travel to Bodh Gaya on May 30, highlighting the deep Buddhist civilisational links shared by India and Myanmar. He will visit Mumbai on June 2 for business and industry interactions and site visits.
Myanmar occupies a unique position in India's foreign policy and regional strategy. It serves as India's gateway to Southeast Asia and plays a vital role in several strategic initiatives. The Ministry of External Affairs has described Myanmar as being at the intersection of three major Indian policy frameworks. These are India's Neighbourhood First, Act East, and MAHASAGAR policies.
Background: India and Myanmar share a 1,643 km land border across Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram, making Myanmar a critical neighbour for India's northeast connectivity and security. Myanmar is India's gateway to the ASEAN region. Key bilateral projects include the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway and the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project. Myanmar was earlier scheduled to visit India for the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) Summit on June 1, which was deferred due to the postponement of the Fourth India-Africa Forum Summit following an Ebola outbreak in African countries. The visit was thereafter converted into a full state visit.
Why in News: Myanmar President's first state visit to India tests knowledge of India's foreign policy frameworks - Neighbourhood First, Act East Policy, and MAHASAGAR - as well as India-Myanmar bilateral relations, key connectivity projects, and the Buddhist civilisational connection through Bodh Gaya.
