DK Shivakumar Elected as Karnataka Congress Legislature Party Leader - To Be Sworn In as Chief Minister on June 3, 2026

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar was on Saturday formally elected as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP), paving way for him to become the new Chief Minister of the state. The name of the CLP leader was formally proposed by outgoing CM Siddaramaiah. Shivakumar is now set to take oath as the new Chief Minister of Karnataka on June 3.

Karnataka's next Chief Minister DK Shivakumar is set to take oath on June 3 at 4:10 PM, bringing an end to days of political speculation following Siddaramaiah's resignation. Shivakumar confirmed the date of the swearing-in ceremony while a Congress Legislature Party meeting was underway to formally elect him as the leader of Congress MLAs in the state. The ceremony will be held at Lok Bhavan, Bengaluru, and is expected to be a simple event. Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi is expected to attend the swearing-in.

Doddalahalli Kempegowda Shivakumar, widely known as DK Shivakumar or DKS, has served eight terms as MLA and is the President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee. The 64-year-old is often described as the Congress party's "troubleshooter." This follows high-level deliberations with the Congress high command in New Delhi. The transition follows a reported power-sharing agreement between Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar, under which Siddaramaiah was to serve as Chief Minister for the first 2.5 years of the term won in the 2023 elections, after which DK Shivakumar was to take over for the remainder.

Background: The Congress party won the Karnataka Assembly elections in May 2023 with a decisive majority of 135 seats in the 224-member House, defeating the BJP. Siddaramaiah was sworn in as Chief Minister in May 2023, with DK Shivakumar as Deputy CM under a reported power-sharing arrangement. The 2.5-year mark was reached in November 2025, but Siddaramaiah did not resign immediately, triggering weeks of political tension. Siddaramaiah formally resigned on Thursday (May 29, 2026), ending speculation and clearing the path for DK Shivakumar to be elected CLP leader on May 30, 2026.

Why in News: State Chief Minister appointments are a staple of competitive exam General Awareness sections. Questions on the new Karnataka CM, party, constituency, tenure, predecessor, and the power-sharing arrangement will be asked in SSC CGL, Banking, and Railway exams. Polity students for UPSC must note the constitutional provisions for the appointment of CM and floor conventions of confidence.
