PM Modi Receives Sweden's Royal Order of the Polar Star; India and Sweden Elevate Ties to Strategic Partnership
During his official visit to Gothenburg, Sweden, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with Sweden's Royal Order of the Polar Star, Commander Grand Cross on 17 May 2026 — the highest civilian honour Sweden awards to a foreign Head of Government. The award was presented by Swedish Crown Princess Victoria in recognition of PM Modi's contributions to strengthening India–Sweden ties and his role in advancing India's engagement on the global stage. This becomes PM Modi's 31st international honour. On the same occasion, India and Sweden formally elevated their bilateral relationship to the level of a Strategic Partnership, with both countries deciding to deepen engagement across areas including green technology, innovation, artificial intelligence, defence, and climate action. PM Modi also addressed the European Round Table for Industry (ERT) in Gothenburg, inviting major European corporations to expand their investments in India.
Background: India and Sweden established diplomatic relations in 1949. Sweden has been a consistent partner in India's sustainable development and innovation efforts. PM Modi's visit to Sweden was the second such bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister. It took place in the backdrop of the recently concluded India–EU Free Trade Agreement and the growing India–Europe strategic convergence. A 2026–2030 joint action plan to deepen economic and technological engagement between the two nations is also being developed.
