India's First Bullet Train Design Unveiled at Ministry of Railways; Ahmedabad–Vapi Section Targeted for August 2027
The Ministry of Railways unveiled the first visual design of India's proposed bullet train on 18 May 2026. A picture of the aerodynamic train - painted in white and orange - was installed at Gate Number 4 of the Ministry of Railways building in New Delhi, giving the public its first official glimpse of the country's high-speed rail future. The train will run on the 508-km Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor, which is being built by the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) in collaboration with Japan, using the Shinkansen technology. The train is designed to achieve a top speed of 320 kmph and will reduce travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad to around 1 hour 58 minutes. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that the first operational section — from Ahmedabad to Vapi covering approximately 100 km - is targeted to open by August 2027, with the full corridor expected to become operational by 2029.
Background: The MAHSR project passes through Maharashtra, Gujarat, and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The route starts at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai and passes through Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, and Anand before terminating at Sabarmati, Ahmedabad. Foundation work has been completed at eight stations in Gujarat. A 21-km undersea tunnel between Mumbai and Thane is also part of the project. The first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) cutterhead was lowered at Vikhroli, Mumbai for underground work. Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF) and Bengaluru-based BEML are jointly developing train sets capable of speeds up to 280 kmph under the Make in India initiative.
