European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen Pledges to Sign India–EU Free Trade Agreement by Year-End 2026

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen pledged on 17 May 2026 that the India–European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) would be formally signed by the end of 2026. This follows the successful conclusion of nearly 20 years of negotiations on 27 January 2026, when PM Modi and EU leaders announced the deal at the India–EU Summit at Hyderabad House, New Delhi. The agreement — often described as the largest trade deal ever concluded by either side — covers tariff reductions on approximately 96–97% of EU goods exported to India, is expected to double EU exports to India by 2032, and creates a combined free trade zone of nearly 2 billion people representing about 25% of global GDP. Before entering into force, the deal requires approval from the Council of the EU, consent of the European Parliament, and ratification by India's Union Cabinet.

Background: India and the EU first launched trade negotiations in 2007, which stalled in 2013 over issues including patent protection, data security, and professional mobility. Talks resumed in June 2022. The agreement was driven partly by geopolitical pressures — India sought to reduce dependence on the US market amid 50% tariff threats, while the EU aimed to diversify away from China. The deal also includes a Security and Defence Partnership and a Mobility and Migration Agreement to expand legal pathways for Indian students and workers into the EU.
