Kerala Launches Priyadarshini Scheme on June 15 to Provide Free Bus Travel for All Women and Transgender Persons on KSRTC Ordinary Services
The Kerala government announced free travel for women and transgender persons from June 15 under the Priyadarshini scheme. The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation released the list of bus categories where free travel will be implemented. Women and transgender persons will be able to travel free of charge on seven categories of ordinary buses operated by KSRTC.
The categories covered under the scheme are Ordinary, City Ordinary, Limited Stop Ordinary, Fair-Stage Ordinary, Town-to-Town, Point-to-Point, and Gramavandi services. Special stickers will be displayed on eligible buses to help passengers identify services covered under the scheme.
Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan announced that the Priyadarshini scheme forms part of the Indira Guarantee programme, a flagship election promise of the newly elected UDF government. The scheme is open to all women and transgender persons of all ages, irrespective of their income or financial background. The concession is expected to cost KSRTC over Rs 60 to 75 crore per month, approximately Rs 800 crore annually. The state government has committed to fully compensate KSRTC for this revenue shortfall, separate from existing annual financial support of Rs 1,500 crore already being given to the corporation.
Background: Kerala's Priyadarshini Scheme follows a growing trend of state governments launching free bus travel schemes for women as a welfare and economic empowerment measure. Earlier examples include Karnataka's Shakti Scheme (launched 2023) and Tamil Nadu's free bus travel for women on state transport services. The scheme is part of the newly elected UDF government's Indira Guarantee, a package of welfare promises made during the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections. The UDF, led by the Indian National Congress, won the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections defeating the incumbent LDF government. V.D. Satheesan was sworn in as Kerala Chief Minister in May 2026. The Priyadarshini Scheme is named after Priyadarshini (a title historically associated with women), reflecting the government's women's empowerment agenda.
Why in News: State government welfare schemes for women's mobility and empowerment are regularly asked in SSC CGL, Banking, UPSC, and Railway examinations.
