UN Charter Day 2026 Observed on June 26 Marking 81 Years Since Signing - India Reaffirms Commitment as Founding Member and Calls Charter a Symbol of Hope

June 26 marks UN Charter Day — the anniversary of the day in 1945 when representatives of 50 nations signed the United Nations Charter in San Francisco, giving birth to the world's most important multilateral institution. This year marks the 81st anniversary of that signing. At the United Nations General Assembly in New York, General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock invited member states to symbolically re-sign the Preamble of the UN Charter as a renewed expression of commitment to its purposes and principles.

India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador P. Harish, symbolically signed the Preamble of the UN Charter, reaffirming India's commitment to the Charter's principles. He described the UN Charter as a symbol of "hope" for India's 1.4 billion citizens. India was one of the 50 founding members of the UN, even though it was still a British colony at the time. The Indian delegation at the San Francisco Conference was led by Sir Arcot Ramaswamy Mudaliar, who signed the original Charter on behalf of India on June 25-26, 1945.

This year the symbolic signing carries extra weight. The UN Charter has come under growing pressure from conflicts in West Asia, the Russia-Ukraine war, and debates around UNSC reform. India has consistently pushed for a permanent seat on the UNSC and reform of its outdated structure to reflect the current realities of the world, arguing that the Global South — especially a country of India's size and democratic credentials — must have a permanent voice in global decision-making.

Why in News: UN Charter Day falls on June 26 every year and is directly exam-relevant. India being a founding UN member despite being a British colony in 1945, Sir Arcot Ramaswamy Mudaliar's role as India's first UN delegate, India's demand for UNSC permanent membership, and the G4 grouping are standard competitive exam questions for SSC CGL, UPSC, Banking, and Railway aspirants.
