RCB Defend IPL Title - Beat Gujarat Titans by 5 Wickets in IPL 2026 Final; Virat Kohli Anchors Chase with 75 off 42 Balls

Royal Challengers Bengaluru became only the third team in history, after Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, to successfully defend the Indian Premier League title as they beat Gujarat Titans by five wickets in the IPL 2026 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, May 31, 2026.

RCB put on a disciplined bowling effort, spearheaded by Rasikh Salam and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, to restrict Gujarat Titans to just 155/8. Despite some turbulence, Virat Kohli scored a fantastic 75 off 42 balls to guide RCB past the total in 18 overs. RCB chased down 156 runs in just 18 overs to win by 5 wickets with 12 balls remaining.

RCB openers Virat Kohli and Venkatesh Iyer got the defending champions off to a brisk start. Rashid Khan dealt RCB a double blow in the ninth over, sending back Rajat Patidar and Krunal Pandya within a span of four balls to reduce RCB to 91/4. Kohli, however, used his experience well to anchor the chase, bringing about his fifty in 25 balls - his fastest half-century ever in IPL - and with Tim David at the other end, ensured the runs counter kept ticking. This is RCB's second consecutive IPL title after winning their maiden title in the 2025 season.

Background: The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the world's most popular T20 cricket league, organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It began in 2008 and the 2026 edition was the 19th season of the tournament. RCB had ended a 17-year trophy drought by winning their maiden title in 2025, defeating Punjab Kings in the final. Defending a title back-to-back has historically been rare in IPL. Only MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings (2010-2011) and Rohit Sharma's Mumbai Indians (2019-2020) had achieved this feat before RCB. The 2026 final was held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad - the world's largest cricket stadium.

Why in News: IPL final results are among the most-asked sports current affairs questions in SSC CGL, Banking, and Railway examinations. Key facts tested include the champion team, runner-up, venue, margin of victory, Player of the Match, Orange Cap, Purple Cap, and the milestone of RCB becoming only the third team to defend the IPL title. The fact that Virat Kohli anchored the chase with his fastest IPL fifty adds another layer of exam-worthy detail.
