Maharashtra Signs Nuclear Energy MoUs Worth ₹6.5 Lakh Crore With Adani, Reliance, NTPC & Lalitpur Power for 25,400 MW Capacity

The Maharashtra government signed Memoranda of Understanding with four major companies on 19 May 2026 for nuclear energy generation projects with a combined proposed capacity of 25,400 MW. The agreements were signed at Mantralaya, Mumbai in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The four companies involved are NTPC Limited, Adani Power Limited, Reliance Industries Limited, and Lalitpur Power Generation Company Limited (a Bajaj Group entity). The total investment across all four projects is estimated at around ₹6.5 lakh crore and is expected to generate approximately 1,23,500 jobs. Three of the four proposed plants are located in the Konkan region — specifically in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. Adani Power has proposed a 6,000 MW facility at Barsu in Ratnagiri with an investment of ₹1.5 lakh crore. Reliance Industries has earmarked Purnagadh in Ratnagiri for 7,200 MW using Small Modular Reactors (Bharat Small Reactors) at an investment of ₹2 lakh crore. NTPC has proposed a 7,200 MW plant at Devgad in Sindhudurg backed by ₹1 lakh crore investment. CM Fadnavis stated the investments align with PM Modi's vision of making India an energy-rich nation and achieving net zero carbon emissions.

Background: India amended the Atomic Energy Act in 2024 to allow private sector participation in nuclear energy for the first time, opening the door for companies like Adani and Reliance to enter the sector. Previously, nuclear power was exclusively under the control of the Department of Atomic Energy and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL). Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are a new generation of compact, scalable nuclear reactors with lower upfront costs. India has set a target of 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047 under its Viksit Bharat energy roadmap.
