India Inaugurates Its First-Ever War Memorial in South Korea to Honour Korean War Heroes
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh jointly inaugurated India's first-ever war memorial on South Korean soil on 21 May 2026. The ceremony was held at Imjingak Park in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, alongside South Korea's Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, Kwon Oh-eul. The memorial was built to mark the 75th anniversary of India's participation in the Korean War (1950–1953) and pays tribute to the humanitarian role played by Indian soldiers during that conflict.
Background: The Korean War was fought between 1950 and 1953. While India did not send combat troops, it contributed significantly through the 60th Parachute Field Ambulance unit — which provided medical support on the ground - and later through the Custodian Force of India (CFI), which oversaw the peaceful return of prisoners of war. Two iconic Indian military figures honoured at the memorial are Lieutenant Colonel A.G. Rangaraj, commanding officer of the ambulance unit, and General K.S. Thimayya, who chaired the Neutral Nations Repatriation Commission (NNRC).
Why in News: This is the first time India has established a dedicated war memorial outside the country specifically for its contributions to the Korean War. It marks a major milestone in the India–South Korea Special Strategic Partnership and concludes Rajnath Singh's four-day visit to Vietnam and South Korea.
