India and Japan Sign First Ever Defence Co-Development Agreement at 16th Annual Summit in New Delhi

India and Japan Sign First Ever Defence Co-Development Agreement at 16th Annual Summit in New Delhi

India and Japan signed their first-ever defence co-development agreement on July 2, 2026, during the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit held in New Delhi. The pact covers the co-development and co-production of advanced defence equipment between the two countries and marks a significant upgrade in the bilateral Special Strategic and Global Partnership. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who arrived in New Delhi on July 1 for a three-day official visit at the invitation of PM Modi, attended the summit. Both leaders also agreed to deepen cooperation in semiconductors, critical minerals, and the development of an Industrial Value Chain linking the Bay of Bengal with India's northeast.

This is the first time Japan has signed a defence co-development pact with any country outside the US-Japan treaty framework, which makes it a landmark in Japan's post-war foreign and defence policy. India and Japan are Quad partners alongside the United States and Australia. Both countries also agreed to expand the scope of their Reciprocal Access Agreement signed in 2023.
