India and Cyprus Elevate Bilateral Relations to Strategic Partnership Level

India and Cyprus formally upgraded their bilateral ties to a Strategic Partnership on 22 May 2026, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi held comprehensive talks with visiting Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides at Hyderabad House, New Delhi. The two nations also agreed to establish a Joint Task Force to deepen cooperation in key areas including infrastructure, shipping, maritime security, and counter-terrorism.

Background: Cyprus is a small island nation in the Eastern Mediterranean and a member of the European Union. Despite its small size, Cyprus holds strategic importance for India - it serves as a significant investment corridor, with Cypriot investment into India nearly doubling over the past decade. Cyprus will also hold the Presidency of the EU Council in 2027, making this partnership timely as India and the EU strengthen their own strategic ties.

Why in News: During President Christodoulides' three-day visit to India, the two countries formally elevated their relationship to a Strategic Partnership - a significant step that gives the relationship a structured and long-term direction across defence, economy, and diplomacy.
