Gurindervir Singh Creates History - Becomes First Indian to Break 10.10-Second Barrier in 100m Sprint with National Record of 10.09 Seconds

Gurindervir Singh reclaimed the Indian men's 100m national record with a historic run at the 29th National Senior Athletics Federation Competition in Ranchi on Saturday, May 23, 2026. Competing at the Birsa Munda Athletics Stadium, the 25-year-old stormed to victory in 10.09 seconds to become the first sprinter from the country to breach the 10.10-second barrier in the men's 100m.

The men's 100m national record stood broken for the third time in less than 24 hours, as the race between Gurindervir and previous national record holder Animesh Kujur produced a fierce battle. Gurindervir had first shattered Animesh's earlier national mark of 10.18 seconds by clocking 10.17 seconds in the opening semi-final, only for Animesh to respond with a stunning 10.15 seconds in the next semi-final to reclaim the record. In the final, Gurindervir delivered the decisive 10.09-second performance.

Gurindervir Singh's 10.09 seconds is the second fastest time by an Asian so far this season, behind 10.08 seconds clocked by 19-year-old Japanese sprinter Fukuto Komuro. His time also breached the 2026 Commonwealth Games qualifying standard of 10.16 seconds set by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). The day also produced two more national records - Tejaswin Shankar became the first Indian athlete to breach the 8000-point mark in decathlon with 8057 points, and Vishal TK registered a time of 44.98 seconds to become the first Indian to clock under 45 seconds in the 400m.

Background: Indian sprinting has long been dominated by the legend of Milkha Singh, who ran 45.6 seconds in the 400m at the 1960 Rome Olympics. The men's 100m, however, has been a slower area of progress for India. The sub-10.10 second barrier in the 100m has historically been considered the entry point into elite global sprinting. Before Gurindervir, the national record had been held by Animesh Kujur of Odisha, who had set 10.18 seconds in 2025. Gurindervir himself had previously held the record before losing it to Kujur.

Gurindervir Singh is a Petty Officer in the Indian Navy. The son of a farmer from Patiala, Punjab, he trains under coach James Hillier at the Reliance Foundation High-Performance Centre. His journey has been marked by steady progress, including a national indoor 60m record of 6.60 seconds. He has also overcome significant setbacks, including a serious bout of stomach ulcers, which at one point threatened his athletics career.

Why in News: Gurindervir Singh's 10.09-second national record is highly exam-relevant because it represents a historic first in Indian athletics - no Indian sprinter had ever broken the 10.10-second barrier before. This is the kind of sporting milestone that appears regularly in SSC CGL, Banking, UPSC, and Railway exam general awareness sections. Questions may be asked on the national record holder, the venue, the meet name, his rank in Indian Navy, his coach, the previous record holder, and the Commonwealth Games qualifying standard.
