Admiral Krishna Swaminathan Takes Charge as India's 27th Chief of the Naval Staff - Succeeds Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi

Admiral Krishna Swaminathan formally took over as the Chief of the Naval Staff on May 31, 2026, succeeding Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, who retired after completing his tenure. Prior to assuming the Navy's top position, Admiral Swaminathan served as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command. The change of guard was formalised in a ceremony in New Delhi, and Admiral Swaminathan was welcomed with a ceremonial Guard of Honour at South Block.

Admiral Swaminathan emphasised the importance of JAI - Jointness, Atmanirbharata (self-reliance), and Indigenisation - as his key focus areas. He stated these areas would remain central to his leadership agenda. He also laid wreaths at the National War Memorial to pay homage to those who laid down their lives in the line of duty.

He was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1987, and is a specialist in communication and electronic warfare. He has commanded missile vessels INS Vidyut and INS Vinash, the missile corvette INS Kulish, the guided missile destroyer INS Mysore, and the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya. He is a recipient of the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal.

Background: The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) is the highest-ranking officer of the Indian Navy and is appointed by the Government of India. The CNS is a member of the Chiefs of Staff Committee, which also includes the Chief of Army Staff and the Chief of Air Staff. The post was established when the Indian Navy was formally constituted after independence. Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, whom Admiral Swaminathan has succeeded, served as the 26th CNS since April 2024. Admiral Swaminathan brings nearly four decades of naval service, with specialisation in communication and electronic warfare, and extensive command experience including of India's premier aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya.
