Lieutenant General N S Raja Subramani Appointed as India's New Chief of Defence Staff
Lieutenant General N S Raja Subramani (Retd.) was appointed as India's next Chief of Defence Staff on 9 May 2026. He will take charge from General Anil Chauhan.
Background: The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) is the highest-ranking military officer in India and the single-point military adviser to the Government of India. The post was created on 1 January 2020 following the recommendations of the Kargil Review Committee. The first CDS of India was General Bipin Rawat who unfortunately passed away in a helicopter crash in December 2021.
