Japanese PM Sanae Takaichi Resigns; Shinjiro Koizumi Elected New Prime Minister of Japan

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi resigned on June 9, 2026, following the Liberal Democratic Party's defeat in the Upper House elections held the previous day. Her resignation triggered a leadership vote within Japan's ruling coalition, and Shinjiro Koizumi — former Environment Minister and son of celebrated former PM Junichiro Koizumi — was elected as Japan's new Prime Minister by the National Diet on June 10, 2026.

Takaichi had become Japan's first female Prime Minister when she assumed office in October 2025 after defeating the LDP's internal challenge. Her tenure, though brief at less than nine months, was marked by the ongoing West Asia energy crisis, Japan-China maritime tensions, and Japan's continued commitment to its defence build-up under the 2022 National Security Strategy. Koizumi, 44, is one of Japan's most popular politicians and is seen as a reformist leader who will continue Japan's security alliance with the United States and deepen economic ties with India and other Quad partners.

India-Japan relations are at a historic high, with both countries being Quad partners alongside the USA and Australia. PM Modi has held several bilateral meetings with Japanese leaders and the two countries are linked through the Japan-India Special Strategic and Global Partnership, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor project (funded by Japan's JICA), and defence cooperation including the signing of the Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA) in 2023.

Background: Japan is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system. The Prime Minister is elected by the National Diet (parliament) and is the head of government. The Emperor is the head of state but holds a largely ceremonial role. Japan's current Emperor is Emperor Naruhito, who ascended the Chrysanthemum Throne in May 2019 following the abdication of Emperor Akihito. The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has governed Japan for most of its post-war history. Sanae Takaichi was the first woman to serve as Japan's Prime Minister.

Why in News: Changes in government of major powers like Japan are standard questions in UPSC, SSC CGL, Banking, and Railway exams. Key exam facts include the new PM's name (Shinjiro Koizumi), outgoing PM (Sanae Takaichi — Japan's first female PM), reason for resignation (LDP defeat in Upper House elections), and India-Japan bilateral context (Quad, Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train, JICA).
