General Dhiraj Seth Takes Charge as India's 31st Army Chief on June 30 Ending a 29 Year Wait for an Armoured Corps Leader
Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth will take over as India's 31st Chief of the Army Staff on June 30, 2026, succeeding General Upendra Dwivedi who retires on the same day. The government announced his appointment on June 13 through the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
What makes this appointment stand out is that Seth belongs to the Armoured Corps, making him the first officer from that regiment to head the Indian Army since General Shankar Roychowdhury stepped down in 1997. That is a gap of nearly three decades. He was commissioned into the 2nd Lancers (Gardner's Horse) in December 1986 and will become only the third Army Chief from that historic regiment.
Over his four-decade career, Seth commanded the Sudarshan Chakra Corps, the Delhi Area, and went on to lead both the South Western Command and the Southern Command - a rare achievement. He also served in a UN peacekeeping mission in Angola. His tenure as COAS is expected to run until August 31, 2028.
Why in News: Army Chief appointments are a guaranteed question in every SSC CGL, Banking, UPSC and Railway exam. Key facts to remember are the 31st COAS, the Armoured Corps connection, the 29-year gap, predecessor General Dwivedi, and the tenure ending in 2028.
